The Oxford English Dictionary ( OED) is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words— past and present—from across the English-speaking world. As a historical dictionary, the OED is very different from dictionaries of current English.

- The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the principal historical dictionary of the English language, published by Oxford University Press (OUP). It traces the historical development of the English language, providing a comprehensive resource to scholars and academic researchers, as well as describing usage in its many variations throughout the world.
- The Oxford Languages 2020 Word of the Year campaign looks a little different to previous years. - The largest dictionary of the English language, edited in Oxford and originally issued in instalments between 1884 and 1928. The OED was edited by Sir James Murray from its inception in 1879 until his death in 1915.
